7 word review: Journaling helps Julian work though poor choice(s).
Stand-alone novel. Realistic fiction. Share with ages 9-14.
While this is technically historical fiction (it’s set in the 1960’s), it reads like realistic fiction: the fast-paced, first-person narrative of 6th grader Julian. He, along with his posse of friends, stars in a novel that gives a fresh take on bullies and bullying behavior. Desperate to get out of a paper on Shakespeare, Julian agrees to write what happened between him and Danley Dimmel (and that posse of friends) that caused him a week-long suspension. Seeing life through Julian’s eyes – including his friendships, first dates, older sister and more – was truly enjoyable. A great read.
