Doll Bones by Holly Black
7 word review: A childhood game is laid to rest.
Stand-alone novel. Light fantasy/adventure. Creepy, not scary. Share with ages 9-13.
Zack, Poppy and Alice are BFF’s who have played in the world of make-believe for years. When Zack abruptly quits, Poppy insists that the group get together to properly end the game by burying the Queen, the eerie porcelain doll who has ruled the game. On a wild adventure to get the Queen to her actual gravesite, the three friends encounter the unexplainable, including the bus passenger who refuses to talk to “the other girl with the blonde hair”. Fast-paced, this one is sure to be a hit with 4th – 6th graders.
