Monday, November 18, 2013. Get ready…it is Book Fair Week!
In my school, I run a week-long book fair through Scholastic. This is the opportunity for students to browse and / or buy books, as there is no check-out or formal library lesson this week. There are, however, some life lessons: locating prices on items, making good selections and choices, browsing effectively, and calculating sales tax come to mind.
This is, hands-down, one of the most anticipated events of the school year. Thanks to a wonderful group of parent volunteers and a set of book-crazy students, our book fair is one of the largest in the state!
One question I often get is How do you get your students to avoid the non-book items in the fair? The answer: create a Fun-Fun Zone with all those toys and trinkets…then don’t open it until the fair is halfway over. Books will sell the first 3 days, and books and toys will sell the last 2 days. Win-win, without losing profit. (And profit is important: all proceeds benefit the library budget!)
